Cake Decorating with a hand drill...really?

So yet once again another Old Settlers Fest has gone by. What a great time! The volunteers who put this together did and amazing job! The store got a 2nd place ribbon for its window ( which technically is 3rd but we are not complaining) We have always struggled in the float catgelory but we still have so much fun putting it together. The cake decorating contest was a complete blast and being able to fool the audience along with my husband was so much fun. Basically it was planned that he show up late and since he was supposed to bring the supplies I was all by myself on stage with no helper or supplies. The audience just jumped right in and started bringing me things they had on hand. A small child handed me their bag of animal crackers to decorate my cake, when Mike did show up he had a random bag of tools.... hammer , flashlight, drill basically nothing to actually decorate a cake. It was funny and he did such a fine job! My girls came to the rescue by giving me lottery tickets that they all had stashed in their purses and that is what ended up on top of the cake.
So many people asked me afterward if we planned it that way. We must have dome a good job if that many thought is was real... but neither Mike or I will be quitting our day jobs anytime soon.

The highlight of the weekend was running the 5K with my sister and my husband, serionsly who would have thought that was even possible! Living in the Illinois River Valley has changed me into someone I didn't know existed. Everyday offers new challenges that I never thought possible.
I can honestly say each day, I can hardly wait to see what tomorrow brings......

Surfboard Mania !!!

Okay this town often surprises me ( in a good way) but I think the residents have surfboard mania!
So to help get into the mood of the upcoming festivities...Team Fudge will be hiding the last 3 surfboards tomorrow! All the clues will be published on Facebook at 3 PM

Many of the store windows are all decked out for the fest and I have spotted a few parade floats in the making! It's funny what a themed festival with award ribbons can do to a town! A few years back, Team Fudge was awarded a First Place Ribbon for the store window and honestly I was tickled to death..... until I saw the Best of Show Ribbon hanging in a neighboring store window for their display!  In Chicago, First Place is First Place but in the country Best Of Show is really First Place and First Place is Second!  This is a very confusing topic for a city girl like me. It is just one of many things I have learned over the years in Lacon and honestly I have a lot more to learn. Gotta go for now, I need to come up with 3 more places to hide the surfboards along with 3 more clues!

So it all began.....

Apparently I knew a while ago that I wanted to blog, I see a very random post from 2009.
This time, I am much more committed that I guess I was in 2009. I asked a very smart guy named Clay from Xapsis Integrated Marketing this question... what should my first blog be about?? (I just realized that Clay gets my first blog shout out) He said start it like this..... "So... it all began"
My first thought was wow that seems a bit overwhelming but I am going to go with it.
I am going to just start with today for now,( I am sure to go back to the beginning many times)
So my day started today with me holding a small mini surf board in my hand scouring the town of Lacon, which is where the store is, looking for the perfect place to hide it ! Now you may think it strange but doing things just like that are kinda typical of what my day really is like. They are never the same and pretty much all very much enjoyable..... the surf board scavenger hunt is for a promotion to support the Old Settlers Festival that is coming up this weekend.... anyone who finds the board gets free fudge. Kinda fun! If someone told me years ago , I would be living in a small town and owning a shop , I would have said they were CRAZY.... but here I am, getting ready to celebrate the 6th anniversary of Julie's Corner Store. It was exactly 6 years ago this week I placed an OPEN flag on the oldest commercial building in town. This born and raised Chicago girl was now living in in the middle of farm country and I had so much to learn!

So if you have read this far, thank you! I promise to keep my posts short and sweet for you as you get an in depth look at who knows what???  Right now I have to figure out where to hide the surf board for tomorrow!
